Common Reasons that Cars Don’t Start
Fuel-related problems are often to blame for no-start. With a failing fuel pump, gas won’t be able to properly transit from the tank to the engine. Symptoms of fuel pump trouble include power loss, sputtering, and decreasing fuel-efficiency. And if you have a clogged fuel filter, then your engine might not be able to receive the fuel it needs to come roaring to life. To prevent this problem, it’s best to replace your fuel filter between 20,000 and 30,000 miles. It’s also possible that your engine won’t fire right up if your fuel injectors are dirty. Pouring a fuel additive into your tank can help with eliminating contaminants from injectors and intake valves.
Another common cause of no-start is a faulty starter. A time-tested sign of starter trouble is that you turn the key and then get nothing except a clicking noise. Another reason to suspect a starter issue is that your engine won’t fire up but your dash lights do illuminate.
Your engine could also fail to start due to problems with the battery/charging system. When you install a new battery, it should work dependably for a minimum of three years. But if your battery dies sooner and not due to an obvious issue like forgetting to turn off your headlights, then you could be dealing with a bad alternator. Other signs of alternator failure include issues with electrical accessories, flickering/dimming headlights, and an illuminated warning light that reads ALT or GEN, or comes on in the form of a little glowing battery.
